Summary

"Mr. Waddington of Wyck" by May Sinclair is a book set in the English countryside that takes us into the complicated world of relationships and high society. Barbara Madden starts working as a secretary for the well-to-do Horatio Bysshe Waddington and as a friend to his delightful wife, Fanny. Right away, Barbara finds herself caught up in the Waddingtons' personal affairs, dealing with the tricky mix of love, influence, and what's expected of people in their social circle. At the beginning, Barbara is just getting used to her job at Lower Wyck Manor, spending most of her time with Fanny, who is portrayed as full of life. The reader gets a peek at Horatio's personality, mostly through his portrait, which sets up an interesting dynamic. As Barbara settles in, the arrival of Ralph Bevan adds an additional layer to the story of social pressure, desire, and the evolving romantic feelings between the group.

About the Author

May Sinclair was the pseudonym of Mary Amelia St. Clair, a popular British writer who wrote about two dozen novels, short stories and poetry. She was an active suffragist, and member of the Woman Writers' Suffrage League. She once dressed up as a demure, rebel Jane Austen for a suffrage fundraising event. Sinclair was also a significant critic in the area of modernist poetry and prose, and she is attributed with first using the term 'stream of consciousness' in a literary context, when reviewing the first volumes of Dorothy Richardson's novel sequence Pilgrimage (1915–1967), in The Egoist, April 1918.
