We follow Nelson Tilford, a young boy who initially feels alone and uncertain, and watch as Mr. Verder, a camp councilor, embraces him into the fold of Camp Chicora. Nelson immediately begins to engage in the camp's bustling environment, enjoying shared meals and fireside gatherings. As Nelson acquaints to the setting, he connects with other campers like Tom Ferris and Dan Speede, where their interactions consist of games, friendly teasing, and shared experiences. As they become familiar with camp life and the expected daily tasks of swimming and baseball, hints of the exciting adventures and robust friendships emerge for the rest of the summer.
