Summary

"Lord Tony's Wife: An Adventure of the Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy advances the saga of the Scarlet Pimpernel, centering on Lord Tony and his wife amidst the turbulence of the French Revolution. Set against the revolutionary fervor of 1789 France, the story opens in Nantes, a city aflame with popular dissent. Peasants, incited by the vengeful Pierre, demand retribution for the execution of a poacher, directing their fury towards the aristocratic Duc de Kernogan, whose daughter, Yvonne, finds herself vulnerable amidst the escalating chaos. This initial conflict introduces a narrative rich in themes of devotion, courage, and the struggle for survival within a society teetering on the brink of transformation, setting the stage for the entanglements that will draw these characters into the orbit of the ever-elusive Scarlet Pimpernel.

About the Author

Baroness Emma Orczy, usually known as Baroness Orczy or to her family and friends as Emmuska Orczy, was a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright. She is best known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel, the alter ego of Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English fop who turns into a quick-thinking escape artist in order to save French aristocrats from "Madame Guillotine" during the French Revolution, establishing the "hero with a secret identity" in popular culture.
