Summary

"An Old Sweetheart of Mine" by James Whitcomb Riley is a collection of heartfelt poems that look back on a youthful romance with a mix of happiness and sadness. The poems explore the speaker's memories of a dear sweetheart from their younger days, painting vivid pictures of innocence and affection. Riley's writing brings to life scenes of playful times and sweet moments shared with this first love. As the speaker remembers their shared dreams and the simple pleasures of youth, the poems show a contrast between those happy days and the present. Although the memories may cause feelings of longing, the poems celebrate how love lasts, recognizing how the old love is reflected in the warmth of a current relationship.
