Summary

"Greater Greece and Greater Britain; and, George Washington, the Expander of England" by Edward A. Freeman is a 19th-century analysis of colonialism and national identity. Through two distinct lectures, Freeman draws comparisons between ancient Greece and Great Britain, spotlighting their expansion and cultural influences. The first lecture examines "Greater Greece" and its colonies, while the second examines George Washington's impact on forging a new identity in America for English speakers. Freeman highlights the contrasts between Greek citizen colonies and British subject-based expansions, illustrating how both retained connections to their homelands despite political divides. He sets the stage to explore political allegiances by contrasting the political configurations of ancient city-states with the British.
